Ear surgery recovery
One thing about ear surgery pinning that leads patients to breathe a sigh of relief is that it’s a rather minor procedure that doesn’t result in a very long recovery. In fact, most patients report very little pain or bruising after the procedure, though sensitivity to the area is common for a couple of weeks. Usually, the dressing placed on the ear after the procedure can be removed within the first week, allowing patients to enjoy a first glimpse at the results.
What happens during ear surgery?
Prior to performing otoplasty surgery, the surgeon will use a local anesthetic to numb the area, though the patient may be either conscious and comfortable or fully asleep throughout the procedure. From there, any necessary incisions are made behind the ears to reduce the visibility of any scarring. Depending on the patient’s needs, an ear pin may be completed to draw the ears closer to the head and reduce the appearance of protruding or large ears. Any incisions made are closed with sutures.
Important facts about the safety and risks of ear surgery
Before deciding to have ear reduction surgery or any form of ear reconstruction surgery, you should be aware of potential risks, including:
- reaction to anesthesia
Be sure to discuss any concerns with your surgeon.
What to expect during your consultation
Before having ear correction surgery done, you will meet with our surgeon for a consultation. During this time, he will analyze the current appearance of your ears and discuss a “game plan” for improving their appearance. The consultation is also a great time to ask any questions that you may have.
Preparing for ear surgery
There isn’t much you need to do to prepare for otoplasty, aside from understanding the procedure’s cost and how it will need to be paid. You shouldn’t need to take much time off work (usually one week), but you will need somebody to drive you home, since you will be put under general anesthesia in most cases.
